Houston DWI driver kills boy: 6-year-old Darien Lewis grandfather talks about moment Pedro Alberto Hernandez hit grandson!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – A 6-year-old boy who was hit by a car and killed has been identified as Darren Lewis. His grandfather was there where Darren was stuck under the truck he saw hit him over and over.

“I got down on the floor, and I hugged him,” Darren’s grandfather, Dana Hubbard, told ABC13 only. “I felt his pulse and said, ‘We have a pulse. Someone called 911 to get my grandson some help. “To take his last breath, and let him go in my hand, it hurts so much.”

Hubbard said his grandchildren were at his house having dinner when they decided to walk across the street for a snack on Leawood Boulevard in southwest Houston. His grandson was walking through the parking lot in front of a washing machine when he saw the truck.

“He came on my left side and hit my grandson. That’s how close he got to me,” Hubbard said. “I managed to hit his car to let him know what had happened. I ran and said, ‘You just hit my grandson.'” He stopped, got off again, drove over my grandson again, and parked his truck on his head.”

Hubbard said the driver smiled at him while yelling to get his grandson off, so he opened his front door.

“I swung on him because he was laughing and I thought it was funny,” Hubbard said.

Houston police charged Pedro Alberto Hernandez with murder and DWI – the third or more counts. According to police, Hernandez admitted to drinking four types of beer beforehand. Records show that Hernandez was still under surveillance for a DWI conviction outside of Fort Bend County in 2020. Under his probation conditions, Hernandez is unable to drink and has had to install and maintain an ignition lock device.

“They let him get away,” Hubbard said. “The guy has to stop somewhere.” “Someone should be held accountable for their actions. No more slap on the wrist.”

Darren was autistic, but his grandfather said he knew how to show his love and was learning to say more words.

“This part is tough,” Hubbard said. “Knowing what he would have been like, despite his handicap, knowing that he couldn’t live to his full potential.”

Hubbard wants his grandson to remember his kind heart. Darren leaves behind a younger brother and cousins whom he has deeply cared for. He always wore a fedora, which one of his younger cousins wore in his honor, and stuck to his teddy bear.

“He was a loving and respectful kid,” Hubbard said. “He’s a cute little boy. He was always cuddling with everyone.”

Hernandez’s wife spoke to ABC13 and wanted to tell the family how sorry she is and her heart goes out to them. She insists that her husband did not drink alcohol beforehand and said his car would not run without a spirometer.

ABC13 has reached out to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for comment.

Hernandez is behind bars on a combined $600,000 bond.
